Overview
This policy explains what IP Jokes processes, why it is needed, and which third-party services support the site. The short version: our IP lookup returns connection details to your browser, our application code does not save the detected IP, and our Google Analytics behavior depends on your approximate region and privacy choices.
IP address detection
When you visit our homepage, we detect your public IP address server-side using Cloudflare's infrastructure. This data is:
- Displayed to you in your browser so you can see your own IP address
- Not saved by IP Jokes application code in a database or application log
- Not included in our custom Google Analytics events
- Not used by IP Jokes to build an advertising profile
The lookup happens in real time, and our application code discards the result after sending the response to your browser. Cloudflare processes connection data as the infrastructure that serves the site. Google Analytics processing is described separately below.
To check IPv4 and IPv6 separately, the browser contacts Cloudflare's family-specific diagnostic endpoints. IP Jokes reads only the connection IP field returned by those checks. If one cannot be reached, we report that address family as not detected. We do not send these checks to an additional IP lookup provider.
Cookies and local storage
IP Jokes automatically uses light mode between sunrise and sunset and dark mode at night. The daily schedule is calculated in your browser using Chicago as a fixed Central Time reference; it does not request your device location or contact a weather service. If you manually switch themes, we store that temporary override in localStorage on your device until the next automatic sunrise or sunset transition. We also store your analytics choice under ipjokes-consent-v1 for up to 180 days so we can respect it across pages.
For visitors in regions where we request consent, Google Analytics does not load before they select Accept analytics. In other regions, Analytics may load by default unless the visitor has turned it off or sends a supported Global Privacy Control signal. When Analytics runs, it may set first-party cookies beginning with _ga to distinguish visits and sessions. We configure those cookies to expire after no more than 180 days, although a later visit may refresh that period.
Select Privacy preferences in the footer to change your choice. If you turn analytics off, we disable future analytics events and remove Google Analytics cookies that this site can access. The rest of IP Jokes continues to work without analytics.
Regional analytics choices
Cloudflare provides an approximate country code with the request it already processes to serve IP Jokes. We use that country code to decide whether Analytics must remain off until a visitor makes a choice. We request opt-in consent from visitors detected in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and certain related jurisdictions. If the country is unavailable or the lookup fails, we request consent by default.
The regional decision endpoint returns only whether consent is required. It does not return the visitor's IP address, and IP Jokes does not save the regional decision in an application database. VPNs and other network routing can affect the country Cloudflare detects.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic patterns and whether site tools and links are useful. Where consent is required, Analytics remains off unless the visitor accepts it. Elsewhere, visitors can turn it off at any time through Privacy preferences. Standard Analytics measurement can include page views, session information, approximate geolocation, and browser or device information.
Our custom events record actions such as completing an IP check, copying a displayed address, running the browser-side VPN check, selecting an internal call to action, or leaving for a VPN provider. We do not place the detected IP address, copied value, ISP, or precise location in those custom event parameters.
Advertising storage, ad personalization, and Google Signals are disabled in the site configuration. Analytics requests are not sent when you continue without analytics or when a supported Global Privacy Control signal is active.
Google states that Analytics may use an IP address during collection for functions such as coarse location and spam detection, then discards the raw address after use. Review Google Analytics data collection, IP address usage, and Google's Privacy Policy for current details.
Maps and connection tests
The full IP details page loads map tiles from OpenStreetMap or CARTO to show an approximate area. The selected map provider receives the IP address used for that request and standard browser request data under its own policy. The VPN leak test may contact Google's public STUN service to check which WebRTC network candidates your browser exposes. We do not send those services the location or ISP details returned by our Cloudflare lookup.
Data IP Jokes does not request
IP Jokes does not ask you to provide:
- Names, email addresses, or account information (we have no accounts)
- Browsing history or search queries
- A device fingerprint created by IP Jokes
- GPS or street-level location
Children's privacy
Our site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to this privacy policy, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
